What to order first
An egg cream
Chocolate or vanilla. People travel for these. If you grew up in New York you already know. If you did not, start here.
Italian ice
Light, sharp, no dairy. It is not ice cream and it is not sorbet. Taste it first. It surprises people.
Cookie Monster
The one children point at. After the egg creams, it is the flavour reviewers name most.
The Italian ice has no dairy in it.
That is just what New York Italian ice is. Dairy-free here is not the leftover option. It is what the shop is known for. Ask us what is in any of it and we will tell you.
Ask for a taste
Samples are free. Ask for one. Ask for three.
The Italian ice especially. It is easier to taste than to explain, and it is not what most people are picturing.
Weekends get busy. Take your minute anyway. Nobody here is in a hurry to sell you a scoop you did not want.
We make the waffle cones on site. Most days you smell them before you see the sign.
Why it costs
what it costs
Organic ingredients cost more. We buy them anyway.
Everything is churned here in small batches. Nothing turns up frozen on a truck. We make the cones ourselves.
We are one counter. A chain spreads its costs over a hundred freezers and we cannot do that. So the price is the price, and you should hear it from us now rather than work it out at the till.
You can take the girl out of New York, but you can’t take the New York out of the girl.
Lisa was fifteen when she got her first job, scooping at Friendly’s. Before that it was Italian ice on the stoop, through hot Brooklyn summers. And homemade ice cream in Maine with her grandparents, from berries off their own bushes.
She found Italian ice again in Hoboken. Light enough that she felt fine giving it to her kids. So she went to Ice Cream University in New Jersey and learned to make it right. Then she brought the lot to a counter at 3rd and Fairfax.
Local Ice is all about being organic, friendly and fresh.
Ice cream for
your thing
Schools, offices, birthdays, a Tuesday afternoon that needed improving. We have done all of them.
Call and ask for Lisa. Tell her how many people you have and she will tell you what works.
Questions we get
Where are you in the market?
Stall 416, West Patio, at the Fairfax end. Gates 6, 7 and 9 all come out on that side. Look up for the round Local Ice sign over the counter. The awning will not help you, every stall on this patio has a green and white one.
Is there parking?
Yes, and we validate. That is 90 minutes free in the market's own car park. Hand us your ticket at the counter. The Grove's structure next door runs $5 for the first hour.
Do you have anything dairy-free?
Yes. New York style Italian ice has no dairy in it at all. It never was made with any. Ask us what is in any of it and we will tell you.
What should I order first?
An egg cream, chocolate or vanilla. Then an Italian ice. Cookie Monster if there are children with you. Taste first, it is free to try.
Are you open later than the market?
Yes. The market shuts at 9 PM Monday to Saturday and 7 PM on Sunday. We stay on until 9:30, and until 8:30 on a Sunday.
More of what
we have made
A year of the counter, all of it made here. Some of it is on today. Some of it went months ago.
What people said
Egg Cream, New York style, here in LA, period. IYKYK. Ditto chocolate ices, just like you had as a kid like I did, if you grew up in NY.
If you’re looking for an authentic Egg Cream, look no further. Local Ice in the Fairfax Farmers Market serves up the real deal in both chocolate and vanilla.
It tastes like it’s homemade and i love that their scoops are generous, unlike haagendaz. Also, you can try the flavors prior to choosing which one you want which not every ice-cream/gelato spot allows.
The Italian ice here is exceptionally flavorful and surprisingly not ice-y in consistency. Their mint chip wasn’t toothpaste-y like other places.
I actually dream of it when it’s been a long time since I’ve visited! It is so clean and perfect and the mango ice is insane!!
Best ice cream in Los Angeles, the best I’ve ever had. You can tell they use quality ingredients.
This place epitomizes the old adage of you get what you pay for. The high price tag is commensurate with the taste.
This is my go-to spot for ice cream when I’m in the area. Not only is the food great, but all of the employees are super upbeat and cool.
Family-owned, unique flavors, best ice cream I’ve ever had. Don’t miss trying it!

Look up rather than around. Every stall on this patio has a green and white awning, so the awning tells you nothing. There is only one round Local Ice sign.
Coming from The Grove? Keep walking. The market runs the whole way between the two and we are at the far end.
